Nevertheless, natural features have not beenneglected ; breadth of effect has been well securedby contrast of massive woodland with liberal spacesof turf; brightness has been obtained by beds ofroses and the ordinary border flowers ; and chroughthis fair scene flows the river Ayr, here churninginto foam among reefs of red sandstone, theresweeping in glassy reaches under the shade ofvenerable trees. Miss Wilson has chosen for her subject the cliffwhich falls sheer from the bluff whereon the mansion-house is built, and which has been skilfully wroughtinto a hanging garden in a series of galleries ratherthan terraces. It is a notable feature, and confersan air of distinction upon what might otherwise beremembered as merely a very pretty garden.
