ndamental principles whichare so obvious and so easily understood that it is a thousandpities they are not more generally obeyed. Aided by theirprecepts, even the simplest rooms in a house or a city apart-ment may afford an example of harmony of contrast insteadof what is in so many instances a discordant assemblageof colors which are so at variance that they produce nothingbut complete lack of repose upon which so large a part ofconsistent decoration absolutely depends. The little apart-ment is complete in every detail, and beyond the two living-rooms which we have described are pantry, kitchen and twobedrooms. One of these rooms is for the use of a man-servant, and the bedroom of the master of the house isfitted up with studied simplicity. Woodwork, furniture, wall and floor-coverings are in various tones of gray. Allof the rooms open into a little hall, where the walls areclosely hung with old prints and engravings, framedautograph letters and many other objects rich in association.
