ey wereso finished as to be verycosy, with the high back and sides. Bedrooms in thosedays were cold rooms, heated only by fireplaces, if atall, and the person seated in one of these well-cushionedchairs was protected from drafts. Owing to the amountof material needed, to cover and stuff one of these chairs, the price was almost prohibitive. Inventories set theirprice at from one pound to ten, according to the styleand fabric used for upholstering. One of this type is inthe Mrs. Nathaniel Mansfield collection, which was origin-ally owned by Col.Timothy Pickering, the friend of Wash-ington, and firstSecretary of theNavy. It shows up-holstering of excel-lent quality andworkmanship, andis an important fac-tor in a fine collec-tion of this style. So many kinds ofchairs are seen, andthey are of so manyperiods, that itwould take a book, entirely devoted tothis article of furni-ture, to initiate oneinto all the myste-ries and fascinationsof furniture lore.
