Patriotic Garden, 1918

This photograph of a small child with a hoe appeared on the cover of the March 1918 Norwester magazine. President Woodrow Wilson had requested that any child who was old enough ought to have a garden to aid in the war effort during World War I. On February 25, 1918, in a letter to then-Secretary of the Interior, Franklin K. Lane, he said “The movement to establish gardens, therefore, and to have the children work in them is just as real and patriotic an effort as the building of ships or the firing of cannon. I hope that this spring every school will have a regiment in the Volunteer War Garden Army.”

A committee in charge of creating a school garden for the Grandview, Marble Cliff and Upper Arlington area selected a site at the intersection of Arlington and First Avenues. The children were to be supervised at all times. The Parent-Teachers’ Association awarded prizes for the best gardens and an exhibit was held at the end of the season to display the produce.
