It grows on the shores of highlandrivers, sometimes in dry ground but often on the water levelamong rocks and stones. Cultivated, it thrives well in anymoderately rich soil. There is a variety with pendulousbranches which when grafted on the common ash formssmall, shady arbors in a short time. The ash retains abeautiful green and luxuriant foliage until late in fall. THE LAUREL FAMILY. Sassafras Laurel, Sassafras officinale.—A small but ornamental tree withirregular crown ofrounded outlines andstraight, slenderstems. Grows in richor moderately gravel-ly soil either in moistor dry positions.Finest in old fieldsand on the outskirtsof woods. The obo-vate, three-clef t leavesare very handsomeglossy green in sum-mer, changing into adull red and crimsonin autumn.
