asfrom horn. A bronze lantern has beenfound in the ruins of Pom-peii, and another at Hercu-laneum. Both of these areof cylinder form, and aresupplied with bronze lamps, with slides of transparenthorn. The handles are barshaped, attached by a chain, while a sliding door gives ac-cess to the lamp proper. Many of the old wood en-gravings that depicted his-torical events taking place inthe latter part of the sixteenthcentury, show pictures oflanterns, both those whichare used for lighting thestreets and those which werecommonly carried by hand. There is no doubt, however, that they had been in use inEngland long before this, for we read that the LordMayor of London, in theyear 1416, issued an ordercommanding that lanternswith lights bee hanged outon Winter evenings betwixtHallontide and Candle-masse. In his plays, here and there, Shakespeare refers to to show that they were used during the pages of a certain old diary, writ- also found showing that lanterns hung Hyde Park to the Queens Palace.
