33i On one side is the drawing-room; on the otherthe dining-room, while passages opening beyondlead to the other parts of the house. Each is aroom of great size, with vast fireplaces, and pan-eled throughout like the hall. The wainscoting,unfortunately, was greatly injured during theCivil War, when much of it seems to have beentorn off by seekers for treasure. To completethe sketch of the plan of the house it is sufficientto state that an anteroom from the drawing-roomgives access to four sleeping-rooms, two on thefirst floor and two on the second; the oppositewing contains the office and room of the managerof the estate and two guest rooms in the secondstory. Perhaps no one feature of Brandon is so in-teresting and important as the great gallery ofportraits which is hung on the walls of thedrawing-room and the dining-room. There areportraits by Sir Godfrey Kneller, Benjamin West,Vandyke, Sir Peter Lely and other celebratedartists, including a collection made in England inthe eighteen
